About Us

Equine Angels of the Rockies (EAR) is a nonprofit horse rescue that focuses on rescuing horses from kill lots. Horses in kill lots remain there until they are shipped to Mexico for slaughter; rescuing them is truly their last chance at life. Most of these horses have already been through auctions and were purchased by a kill buyer or brought to the kill lot directly by breeders who have over-bred or owners that just don’t have the time for or can’t afford to keep their horse any longer.

Giving the horses value is EAR’s primary objective so they will not end up back at an auction. We carefully screen our adoptive homes and will always take our rescues back if they don’t work out for any reason.

Surprisingly, many of these horses are registered and include breeds such as Thoroughbreds off the track, award winning Quarter horse lines, Arabians, Mustangs, Tennessee Walkers, Morgans, Belgians, Miniature horses, Donkeys, Andalusian, Paints, Percherons, American Saddlebreds, and pretty much all breeds of equine. Some are already trained, from gaited to trail horses to western pleasure, to performance-orientated.

Of these horses, thousands ship per week to Mexico and Canada. At EAR, we make a difference by saving as many as we can from this fate. The largest kill lots are in Texas, Louisiana, and Washington. We work with rescue partners in these states who help select our rescues. Our rescues are quarantined for 45 days and given extensive veterinary care to start the road to a new healthy life. After the 45 days of quarantine, the horse is either shipped to their new home or transported to Fountian Colorado. In Colorado, we operate out of Dreamcatchers .The horses will be assessed as to their previous training and temperament. After working with the horse, we determine (or the horse does) what direction best fits its personality and we begin training the horse. Some horses are very energetic and want to work and become some kind of performance horse while others are happy as trail and children’s horses.

Please help us SAVE more horse lives. Your donation is tax-deductible and will truly be "paying it forward".

Who We Are

Picture
Alissa Skildheim is the president and founder of Equine Angels of the Rockies (EAR). Alissa's love of horses started as a little girl with "Misty of Chincoteague." She started riding English style while she lived in Germany as a young teenager and just recently rekindled her passion for horses through rescue. After personally saving 30 horses and 5 donkeys from the kill pens in Texas and Louisiana, she decided to start EAR. Alissa believes that you have to do something to make a difference in this life - that you have to pay it forward. She has been a big part of the community, serving on numerous boards and helping organizations raise money. Alissa is a very successful Associate Broker at LIV Sotheby's International Realty. When not saving horses or getting a therapeutic trail ride in, she spends time with her beloved sons, Eirik and Karsten, and husband Eivind.  Please help Alissa make a difference!
